Ensconced in the
tumbling greenery that only row upon row tea plantations can create, the Tea
Factory is heralded by some as the finest hotel in the mountainous region of
upcountry Sri Lanka. As the name suggests, the Tea Factory was born out of a
tea factory built in the 1930s by British Planters and thus is the only hotel
in the country that can offer the experience it does. It is located in Kandpola
toward the east of Nuwara Eliya, The journey from Kandy will take approximately
conversion of an industrial factory into the sublime was one that left many
remnant of an old trait. The reception is now in what was the drier room and
the areas designated for sifting and packaging are now the hotel’s imposing
restaurant and bar. In a true attempt to familiarize any visitor with the
arduous process of tea making, a guest can actually pluck their own tea and
witness it being processed. The ambience will leave you lusting after a peace
of an era you have never known and the gentle mist will wrap itself around your
senses as well as your heart, leaving you with the stillness that only ultimate
relaxation can provide.
The 57 well appointed
deluxe and standard rooms come with standard amenities such as attached
bathrooms with hot water, wall to wall carpeting, TV with satellite channels,
heating and an in room menu, consisting of the finest teas. All rooms command
views of the rolling highlands.
The restaurant is
housed in an old railway carriage and is reminiscent of the old steam trains
that used to wind their way around the mountainside. The cuisine is varied
between local and international and is prepared by an award winning chef. There
are also two bars, a sauna, gym, golf course, library and small shopping
arcade. Coco Spa offers a range of restorative therapies using nature’s bounty
of healing herbs and oils.
A guided tour of tea plucking and tea making comes highly
recommended. The hill country of Sri Lanka is rife with bird life and a bird
watching trek can be exciting. Hiking tours can also be arranged. For a full
