Ceylon Tea Trails

AREA Hill Country
FROM COLOMBO 121 km - 5 hours

The Sri Lankan hill country is one that is utterly beguiling. It is difficult to imagine that in a country of sun and beaches, that a few hour’s drive will leave you high among the mountain tops where the air is brisk, the gardens misty and influences of old colonial Ceylon remain almost untouched. The Ceylon Tea Trails collection is a highly acclaimed, super luxurious and much recommended choice when it comes to hill country accommodation. There are four bungalows in the collection, all of which routinely maintain a slice of life during the colonial times. Here it is possible to experience an era now since long past. Each of the bungalows posses a style and come equipped with butler, chef, manager and support staff. Built during 1890 and 1939, the Ceylon Tea trails collection enable visitors to marvel at the wonders of the mountainside as well as indulge in luxury.

As they Ceylon Tea Trails Collection is located at an elevation of 4000ft above sea level, the climate is a welcome difference from the bleached streets of Colombo. Though the properties themselves are authentically colonial, rest assured that you will not be left wanting when it comes to comfort. The facilities are modern and also bear in mind that planter’s bungalows, as the name suggests were built for planters- those that reigned supreme during colonial times, and thus, their every whim was catered to. It is this feeling that the Tea Trails collection attempts to convey. The surrounding views are difficult to describe- so breathtaking are they when looked upon. Either views of lush tea plantations, still waters of a lake or wonderful manicured English gardens are all on offer. A stay here will result in a visitor becoming well familiar with the process of making tea as well as everyday tea estate life. You can choose to stay in one or trek through all four, experiencing all that they have to offer.

So named after a Chinese village from whence the first tea seedlings came, Tientsin is the oldest of the four. It was one of the very first planter’s bungalows to be built in Ceylon and at 4600 ft, it is also at the highest elevation when compared with the others. The original owners of Tientsin wanted to preserve their British ways , and thus built it to stand as a haven- reminiscent of home. The rooms and suites have changed little since those days as has the traditional English lawns. Wandering around the gardens, one can catch glimpses of many species of birds, and the rose terraces are ideal for sampling Sri Lankan tea as well as for observing a beautiful sunset. Other facilities include a tennis court, swimming pool, library and outdoor dining.

A typical day at the Tea Trails collection will leave you well satisfied. ‘Bed Tea’ is served by your personal butler- providing the perfect luxurious start to any day. Lunch consists of traditional Sri Lankan rice and curries, often followed by a full belly and a luscious afternoon nap, only to be woken for high tea- an intrinsic part of colonial life. Dinner can be taken at the long planter’s table as has been done for many years. The cuisine is scrumptious and both international and Sri Lankan fare is served.
