Villa Bentota

AREA South
FROM COLOMBO 64 km - 2 hours

Located in the beachside town of Bentota, Villa Bentota is one of many distinctions. The first of which being that it is housed in the Mohotti Villa which was the first ever boutique hotel to be opened on the island and was one that was designed by Sri Lankan architectural wonder Deshamanya Geoffrey Bawa, whose designs still warm the heart and astound the mind. The second is that it is now managed by life stylist and entrepreneur Shanth Fernando, whose other ventures include the sumptuous cuisine of the Gallery Café, the unique and eclectic products sold at Paradise Road as well as the more recent Tintagel- a luxurious boutique hotel in Colombo. Drive times to Colombo will vary in accordance to traffic but if the roads are clear a one and a half hour journey can be expected.

As is expected of anything that this particular management undertakes, Villa Bentota exhibits hints of Paradise Road style. White walls, cement floors and mosaic tiling alongside clean cut rattan chairs, unique and unexpected ornaments that sit atop table surfaces all bring the Villa Bentota experience to life. Upholstery follows contemporary chic, with the colour palette consisting of stark black on white or subtle and warm beige. Carefully chosen painting and sculptures adorn the walls and dot the premises. These little accoutrements do indeed set Villa Bentota apart from its competitors in terms of décor. Bawa favoured the frangipani tree- whose flower remains a recurrent theme in Sri Lankan art and design, so naturally the delicate and fragrant flower makes an appearance in the gardens with winding barks looking down on the swimming pool. The whole atmosphere has a certain romance to it so it comes as no surprise that Villa Bentota is frequented by honeymooners with many a wedding being held here as well.

The property has 15 rooms and suites on offer. All of these are well furnished and elegantly designed and most feature fantastic sea views. The suites have private balconies and some even feature plunge pools. Added facilities include open concept showers and en suite baths, LCD televisions with satellite channels, air conditioning and ceiling fans, king size beds, safes and mini bars. The Mohotti Suite is truly special with two double rooms, private living space and large glass windows which provide spectacular views of the surroundings.

There is a swimming pool, a new addition and the original swimming pool designed by Bawa still remains as well. The extensive two acre garden provides for ample opportunities to walk around and dine outdoors, if desired. The Villa Café follows in the same footsteps as The Gallery Café- providing divine cuisine and is open to non residents of the hotel as well. There is also the Villa Gallery where Sri Lankan artists are encouraged to exhibit their work.

The town of Bentota is famed for its water sporting opportunities, so the more adventurous will delight in exploring this option. The turtle conservation project in Kosgoda is also easily accessible as is the historic city of Galle. Those who wish to let their hair town may favour the energetic beachfront towns of Hikkaduwa or Unawatuna.
