This sophisticated beach front property is located in the tiny fishing hamlet of Thalpe, which is home to one of the calmest bays in the region. The Frangipani Tree prides itself on its exquisite luxury, highly personalized service and a secluded location where guests can bask in the wonders of the south coast and explore its vivacious heritage. The journey from the international airport will take approximately four and a half hours, or consider taking an air taxi to Koggala, which is 45 minutes away by car.


The Frangipani Tree is the sister property of the much praised Fort Printers which is located right in the middle of the Galle Fort. Thus, under the same management, the same standards of quality, privacy and service are adhered to. Designed by Channa Daswatte who is a prominent figure in the architectural sphere as well as protégé of Sri Lankan architect extraordinaire Geoffrey Bawa, Frangipani Tree derives its name from the trees of the same name that grow in the courtyards of the hotel. The hotel has clay tiles, cement floors and verandahs, while the furnishings are a combination of timber and wood, with a colourful cushion or two thrown in.


Accommodation comes in the form of 10 suites which are housed in four separate villas. They are named after species of marine turtles that come ashore to nest on the nearby beach and each host impressive views of the Indian Ocean. They are open and airy and come with a private garden four poster beds adorned with soft linens, an expansive bathroom with contemporary fittings, sitting and dining areas, sofa beds and a covered terrace with built in sofas. They are all completely secluded to ensure that you are free do as you wish in the privacy of your suite.
Hawksbill and Leatherback
These villas have two suites each which have outdoor living areas and private dining tables. They look out on to the ocean and the en suite bathrooms have designer fittings, bathtubs and hair dryers. You can choose from an impressive selection of pillows and there is an authentic Bawa designed leather chair as well. Leatherback is closer to the beach. Other amenities include iPod and iPod docking stations, air conditioning and high speed WiFi internet access.

This villa overlooks the lap pool and also has panoramic ocean views. There is only one bedroom and all the features of Hawksbill and Leatherback are present with the addition of a platform bed.

The Kemps Ridley
This villa has one suite and opens out on to the pool. It comes with a platform bed in addition to the other amenities present.

Olive Ridley
Olive Ridley is a two storey villa which has five independent bedrooms. Each bedroom comes with spacious indoor and outdoor living spaces as well as private dining table.


Meals are lovingly prepared by the experienced chef in accordance with guest’s preferences which are discussed at the beginning of each day. They can be taken by the pool, on the beach or in your suite and comprise of local and international fare, which are made out of fresh seafood and other produce from the markets. The pool has breathtaking views of the ocean and there is a spa where relaxing and restorative therapies are offered. During season many species of marine turtles can be observed, even from the hotel itself. A yoga instructor can be arranged with prior notice.


The nearby beaches of Unawatuna and Mirrissa offer a comprehensive range of water sports, and the beach adjacent to the property is extremely safe for swimming, especially during season. A turtle night safari is also highly recommended as is a visit to the historic city of Galle and its 17th century Dutch fort.
