Located in Thalpe
which is a beautiful and much visited town just a short drive from Unawatuna,
you will find Apa Villas- a boutique property which consists of three separate
villas. Thalpe is known for its safe swimming bay, where even children can
frolic in the shallow turquoise water. The drive from Colombo will take
approximately four and half hours.
Founder of the
Insight Travel Guides Hans Hofer is the man behind Apa Villas. This stylish and
tranquil beachside retreat draws its inspiration from southern Sri Lankan
architecture. Thus, it incorporates features such as verandahs, courtyards,
open spaces that allow the cooling ocean breeze, columns and archways. The
décor and furnishings however stand sharply in contrast to this with strong
minimalist influences, cement recliners, daybeds and floors along with
contemporary timber and glass furniture. It is perhaps this quality that
strongly illustrates Apa Villas commitment to modernity as well its love for
Sri Lankan heritage.
The three villas are
named after Sri Lankan spices. They are cinnamon, cardamon and saffron.
These welcomingly open rooms are filled with sunlight and happy cheer. They
feature an extensive lounge that takes you out on to an outdoor terrace with
breathtaking views of the hotel’s gardens and the sea. All rooms are air

Cardomon villa has two suites which are air conditioned, feature en suite
baths and private lounge space and walk-in dressing areas. The bedrooms feature
decorative accordion style screens. Guests can wind down in the shared verandah
while enjoying views of the hotel gardens and the ocean. There is also a
sizeable dining table.
Of all the rooms on offer at Apa Villas, Saffron rooms are the most
spacious. They feature their own private verandahs, and the two rooms share a
spacious master bath which takes you to either the garden, living room or pool.
The rooms are separated by a lily and fish filled pond.
Facilities include a
rectangular infinity pool and a wooden deck beyond from which guests can
experience breathtaking ocean sunsets. The sea immediately in front of the
property is not safe for swimming though a drive or walk will definitely take
you to a beach that is. Meals are served according to guests wishes in the
garden or the privacy of your own villa. They consist of both Sri Lankan and
