Hideaway Lounge

AREA East Coast
FROM COLOMBO 314km - 8 hours

Located amongst verdant gardens in the surf hot-spot town of Arugam Bay, Hideaway is a family home turned guest house that has been in the family for 30 years. The Bay is widely known amongst the surfing community due to the fact that is regarded as one of the top ten surfing spot in the world. It comes alive during the surfing season, particularly when Sri Lankan Airlines hosts their annual Arugam Bay Surfing Competition. The journey from Colombo will take approximately 8 hours by road.

The Hideaway offers what are generally regarded as the best air conditioned accommodation in the bay. The feel is homely, peaceful and relaxed, in tune with the owner’s belief that the Hideaway should function as a home away from home. The six acre property is filled with jungle creepers, coconut trees and flowers, home to many birds, monkeys and the occasional mongoose. The shady groves are ideal for those seeking refuge from the busy world, and the service is highly personal.

There are several accommodation options at varying styles. The main building houses five rooms which are located upstairs, and open out onto an exquisite balcony. The surrounding gardens house 9 other villas which can accommodate either two or five people. All of these come with en suite bathrooms. They also feature all hotel style amenities as well as housekeeping services. Villas 8 and 9 have air conditioning.

The main house has a TV with satellite channels, DVD and CD player, adjacent to the dining area and the state of the art kitchen. The restaurant serves a variety of cuisine, for example, Sri Lankan, western and Chinese. The seafood is exquisite so you can indulge in the likes of fresh lobster, prawns, crab and cuttlefish. There are books and magazines in the lounge and the owner, who is a bit of nature enthusiast, has created a whimsical little ‘Nature Corner’ where you can educate yourself on Sri Lankan flora and fauna.

Surfing tours are freely available with varied grades of waves available from beginner to intermediate to experienced. Boards are freely available for rent and instructors are too. Arugam Bay lies on the edge of Yala East or Kumana National Park. For a full list of activities in the area, visit our East Coast Destination Profile.
