AREA West Coast

Housed in a century old ancestral home in one of Sri Lanka’s most elite suburbs, this boutique hotel is yet another undertaking by Sri Lankan life stylist and entrepreneur Shanth Fernando. Located in Cinnamon Gardens, Tintagel once belonged to the family of former President Chandrika Bandanaike Kumaratunge, making it a place of politics and decisions that would shape the future of the country. In fact the world’s first female Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaraniake resided at this very place until her death in 2000. Its illustrious location makes it ideal for both business and leisure travelers and it is in close proximity to Colombo’s finest bars, restaurants and shopping centers.

From the outside, Tintagel retains its stately mansion demeanor, and even the interiors have only seen sympathetic renovations excluding the addition of a new wing. Owner Shanth Fernando is also the man behind The Gallery Café, which is one of Colombo’s leading restaurants and Paradise Road, which is known for the eclectic and unique items it sells. Thus, any venture undertaken by him inevitably possesses the same style and attention to detail. In the three years it took for Tintagel to be refurbished to perfection, no expense was spared nor was any intricacy overlooked. Original features still stand as classic illustrations of traditional Sri Lankan architecture such as wooden floors, ornate columns and high ceilings. However, the interiors are warmly contemporary with ebony blacks and deep russets, reds and rattan chairs, white sofas coupled with coppery cushions- the effect really is quite spectacular. The care taken in the choosing of furnishings is more than apparent with sofas from Portugal, rugs from Nepal, Egyptian cotton sheets and many other delights from all over the world.

Tintagel has 10 air-conditioned suites on offer. All of these differ in terms of décor with each possessing a bold and distinct style. The ceilings are high and the floors- wooden, while the en suite bathrooms are spacious and feature tubs, rain showers and large vanities. The sheets are 400 thread count Egyptian cotton and beds they adorn are luscious. Other in room facilities include WiFi internet, IDD telephones, mini bar, ceiling fans, LCD TV’s with DVD/CD players, king size beds, private balcony or courtyards and personal safes. Executive Suites - located on the ground and first floor, all executive suites come with either a separate living space, balcony or courtyard. Sizes vary from anywhere between 270-505 sq feet and décor varies from cheery avocado to elegant mochas, ebonies and rich chocolates. Superior Suites - These are decidedly much more spacious with lavishly decorated private living spaces. There is also either a large private courtyard or balcony. The colour palette differs from suite to suite some pale ivory and ash, or a vibrant indigo paired with ebony or a deep brown. They also feature Bose iPod docks and are preferred by honeymooners or those seeking romantic escapes.

When it comes to meal time at Tintagel, you will be spoilt for choice. Following in the footsteps of the well known Gallery Café, naturally the same standards are adhered to when it comes to cuisine. Dining takes place either indoors or outdoors- that is left to you. There is also a private dining room for intimate functions. The Red Bar is great for sampling wines and cocktails and has a relaxed feel while the Library features 500 leather bound volumes on various topics, as well as a computer and TV. Massages can be arranged with prior notice as well as spa and beauty treatments. There is also a swimming pool, gym and steam room. All guests enjoy a complimentary 10% discount at Paradise Road outlets.
